# HDBaseT Extenders in the UAE: Extending AV Signals 100m Over Cat6

## What is HDBaseT?

HDBaseT is a connectivity standard that transmits high-definition video, audio, Ethernet, power, and control signals simultaneously over a single standard Cat5e or Cat6 cable at distances up to 100 metres. Developed by the HDBaseT Alliance (Samsung, Sony, LG, and Valens among founders), it is the most widely deployed professional AV distribution technology for distances beyond 15 metres.

HDBaseT replaces multiple cables — previously you would need separate HDMI, RS-232, IR control, and Ethernet cables — with a single structured cabling run. In UAE villas and hotels where displays may be 30–80 metres from the equipment rack, this simplification dramatically reduces installation labour and cost.

## What HDBaseT Transmits Over a Single Cat6 Cable

- **4K Ultra HD video:** Up to 4K/30Hz (HDBaseT 1.0) or 4K/60Hz 4:4:4 (HDBaseT 2.0) with HDCP 2.2 and HDR

- **8-channel audio:** LPCM 7.1, Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and other lossless formats

- **Full gigabit Ethernet:** 100Mbps bidirectional for network connectivity at the display location

- **RS-232 serial control:** Two-way RS-232 for display power and input selection

- **Bidirectional IR:** Remote control pass-through from display location to source devices

- **Power over HDBaseT (PoH):** Up to 100W to power the remote receiver — no local power supply needed

## Cabling Best Practices for UAE Installations

The UAE's electrical environment — large AC compressors, VFD drives, and other EMI sources — makes Cat6 the recommended minimum. Cat6A shielded (F/UTP or S/FTP) is recommended for runs near high-voltage cable trays or plant rooms. Additional best practices:

- Use solid-core (not stranded) Cat6 for runs over 30 metres

- Avoid splice joints — run continuous cable from transmitter to receiver

- Maintain minimum 150mm separation from parallel power cable runs

- Test every run with a Cat6 cable tester before installing AV equipment
