What "AV over IP" actually means
Traditional HDMI matrix switching uses dedicated hardware — a matrix switcher with fixed input and output counts, linked to displays by HDBaseT or HDMI extenders. AV over IP replaces that hardware with network switches. Each source connects to an encoder, each display to a decoder, and the network routes video between them. Adding another display means adding another decoder — no matrix upgrade required.
Why this matters
- Scalability — 16 sources and 40 displays is the same system as 4 sources and 4 displays, just with more endpoints
- Distance — video runs anywhere the network runs, not just 100 metres from a matrix
- Integration — AV traffic coexists with IT traffic on managed network switches
- Upgrade path — expand by adding encoders and decoders, not by ripping out a matrix
CYP IP-7000 specifics
The IP-7000 series uses AVLC (CYP's adaptive compression) to carry 4K HDR over 1Gbps network switches without requiring 10Gbps infrastructure. That brings the cost down significantly versus uncompressed AV over IP systems that demand expensive managed switches. The platform includes encoders, decoders, network controllers and control system integration.
Where it's specified
