KNX is an open building automation standard. Lighting, blinds, underfloor heating, air conditioning and sensors from different manufacturers all talk to each other over one wired bus, they are commissioned once in ETS, and the logic lives in the devices themselves rather than in a cloud account. What KNX does not give you out of the box is Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa control. That gap is closed with a 1Home server, and Cache is the exclusive 1Home distributor in the UAE and GCC.
KNX is a protocol, not a brand. A KNX system is a bus running to every device: switch actuators for lighting circuits, blind actuators for shading, valve and fan coil actuators for climate, plus keypads, presence detectors and temperature sensors. Every device is addressed and programmed in ETS, the KNX Association's engineering tool, which is also where the project file lives for the life of the building.
Two things follow from that design and they matter on site. First, the system is decentralised: once commissioned, devices talk to each other directly, so there is no single controller whose failure takes the house dark. Second, it is manufacturer neutral. A KNX keypad from one brand drives a KNX actuator from another, which is why specifiers use it on projects that will be maintained for twenty years by somebody other than the original integrator.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi villa work has the three characteristics KNX handles best: a lot of lighting circuits, a lot of shading, and a cooling load that runs most of the year. A wired bus copes with that scale without the congestion you get when a large property is run entirely over wireless, and the cooling side can be brought into the same system rather than left on separate wall thermostats.
It also survives handover. The project file opens in ETS, any KNX integrator can pick it up, and the client is not locked to one company for the next change request. On multi unit and developer led projects, that is usually the deciding argument.
KNX was designed for building control, not for consumer ecosystems. On its own it does not appear in Apple Home, it does not answer to Siri or Alexa, and it has no native route into the Matter devices clients keep buying. Owners who have just spent heavily on a KNX installation notice this quickly, because the smart speaker in the kitchen controls a lamp that is not part of the system while the KNX lighting they paid for does not appear in the app on their phone.
This is what 1Home does. In their own words, 1Home is "the central brain that unites all your devices": you keep the KNX installation exactly as it is and add a 1Home server alongside it, which exposes the KNX system to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Matter.
The 1Home Server KNX Pro is the model for full projects, described by the manufacturer as "the ultimate Server for your KNX smart home. Use multiple mobile apps, voice control, simply setup complex automations. Integrate all wireless devices supporting Matter." It works in both directions, so Matter devices can also be brought into a KNX installation rather than living in a separate app. 1Home also provides secure remote ETS access, which is the difference between driving to site for a change and doing it from the office.
For integrators the practical points are that nothing in the KNX programming is thrown away, the client gets the interface they already know how to use, and the handover conversation gets easier. The full range sits on the 1Home collection and the brand page at 1Home UAE.
The 1Home Touch is the wall panel that goes with it. It is a four inch touchscreen that auto configures directly from the 1Home Server, so the room by room interface is generated from the project rather than built by hand, and it covers lighting, climate, shading and scenes with intercom functionality and a proximity sensor built in. On a villa with a dozen panels, the time saved building UIs is the whole argument.
Most UAE projects run VRF or fan coil systems that are not KNX to start with. CoolAutomation gateways put them on the bus, so the air conditioning is controlled from the same keypads, panels and app as everything else instead of being stranded on the manufacturer's own controller. KNX is only as reliable as the bus it runs on. Use proper certified KNX bus cable, keep it clear of mains runs, and pull spare capacity to every device position while the walls are open, because retrofitting a missed drop in a finished villa costs more than the entire cable order.
